Formula One facts and figures

January

i About facts-figure section.

Even if most Formula 1 drivers were not born in January they are first in all statistics. It is not surprising when we have four drivers who have become world champions, with many active races and at the top of many statistics.

Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher are on the first two places in all categories. They are equal in number of championships won, Hamilton is in first place in race entries, front row starts, pole position, finish in points, podium, victory. Schumacher only leads on the fastest lap. In the 2022 season he lost first place in race entries, before the start of the 2023 season Hamilton has 2 races more.

At the first race in 1950 at Silverstone, competed two drivers born in January, Bob Gerard and Brian Shave-Taylor. Bob finished in 7th place, missing by one position that he would be the first driver born in January to score points. The last two drivers who competed are Hamilton and Sergio Perez, Perez ranking on the podium.

The first driver to achieve a pole position is Dick Rathman in 1958 at Indianapolis. After three turns, he left the race, being involved in an accident with several cars. Roger Ward is the second driver to get pole position in 1959 also at Indianapolis, he managed to win the race. Just one day away, Jo Bonnier also takes pole and wins the race at Zandvort in 1959. After a long break, Jacky Ickx between 1968 and 1972 is the only one to win, 13 in number. In 2022, Sergio Perez is the last to get pole position at Jeddah.

Front row start succeeded for the first time Art Cross in 1953 at Indianapolis. The last one to succeed is Sergio Perez in 2022, five times.

In 1968 at Rouen, Pedro Rodriguez obtained the first fastest lap, followed in the same year by Jacky Ickx. Sergio Perez is the last which had fastest lap in 2022, in three races. Also in 2022, Hamilton also gets the fastest lap twice.

Art Cross obtains the first points, at Indianapolis in 1952, a season in which Paul Frere also obtains, obtaining two points each. The last to score points is Sergio Perez in 2022, a season in which he and Hamilton scored points 38 times, there being no race in which at least one of them did not score a point in 2022.

Art Cross also gets the first podium in 1953 at Indianapolis, followed by Jimmy Bryan in 1953 and Paul Frere in 1956. Perez is the last in 2022. There has never been a podium with all drivers born in January, but in 50 races there have been two pilots each from January. The first time in 1968 at Spa-Francorchamps, Pedro Rodriguez and Jacky Ickx finished 2nd and 3rd, and the last time in Mexico City 2022, Hamilton and Perez also finished 2nd and 3rd.

The first victory was left to wait, it only came in 1958 at Indianapolis for Jimmy Bryan, followed by Roger Ward and Jo Bonnier in 1959. They obtained victory in two consecutive days, just like in the pole position.

In 1969 at the Nurburgring, Jacky Ickx made a hat trick for the first time, achieving this four times. Besides him, Gilles Villeneuve and Jenson Button won once, Lewis Hamilton 18 times and Michael Schumacher 22 times.

The first to win the title of champion is Jody Scheckter in 1979 followed by Michael Schumacher 7 times, Button once and Hamilton 7 times, the last time in 2020.
